From the beginning of May until August one can see orchids growing and blooming in their most natural way all over Saaremaa, but especially in Vilsandi National Park. The reason, why there are so many orchids in Western Estonia and our islands, is the appropriate climate and quantity of lime in our soil. In Estonia there are 38 different species of orchids, of those 36 grow also in Saaremaa, which outnumber even our neighbouring countries Finland and Latvia. Since 1983 all orchids are under protection in Estonia.
